Floor-to-ceiling cat tree: benefits, installation and ceiling height
Share
When floor space is short, the answer is to go up. A floor-to-ceiling cat tree takes up the space of a plant pot and gives your cat more than two metres of vertical course. Here is how to choose and install it properly.
How does a floor-to-ceiling cat tree work?
The central column is height-adjustable. A pressure system or telescopic rod wedges it between floor and ceiling, which keeps the whole stable without screwing it into the wall. Platforms, hammocks and scratching posts are arranged around this column.
The benefits
- Very small footprint: ideal in an apartment.
- Lots of height: cats love high points to observe.
- Stability: held by the ceiling, it doesn't tip like a freestanding tree.
- No drilling: suitable for rentals, provided you follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Measure before buying
- Measure the height from floor to ceiling at the planned spot, not just at the centre of the room.
- Check the tree's adjustment range (for example 200 to 261 cm): your height must fall within it, with a little margin.
- Check the type of ceiling: a solid ceiling (concrete, reinforced plasterboard) withstands pressure better than light panelling or a false ceiling.
- Spot obstacles: light fixture, beam, sprinkler, moulding.
Installation: best practices
- Assemble the tree lying flat, then stand it up and adjust the height.
- Adjust the pressure according to the instructions: too little and the tree moves; too much and you risk marking the ceiling.
- Place a small protector or pad between the top of the column and the ceiling.
- Once in place, push firmly: it shouldn't sway.
- On a slippery floor, add a non-slip mat under the base.
Which model to choose?
- Floor-to-ceiling wooden cat tree, adjustable 200 to 261 cm: a wooden structure for a vertical course.
- Adjustable wooden cat tree with hammock: also offers a napping spot.
- Floor-to-ceiling cactus cat tree, adjustable 205-255 cm: an original design for the living room.
- XL cat tree 236-258 cm: for high ceilings.

Maintenance
- Check the column pressure every two to three months, especially after a move or a change of season.
- Tighten the platform screws.
- Vacuum the fur weekly and wash removable cushions.
Frequently asked questions
Does a floor-to-ceiling tree damage the ceiling?
It can leave a slight mark if too tight or unprotected. Set the pressure to the minimum necessary and use a protective pad.
Is it suitable for a large cat?
Yes, provided you check the maximum load and platform size. For a Maine Coon, see our guide.
Can it be installed in a rental?
With no drilling in the wall it is generally possible, but check your lease.
