Which cat tree for a Maine Coon? Size, load capacity and how to choose
Share
A Maine Coon is not an ordinary cat: an adult male commonly weighs between 6 and 9 kg (some exceed 10 kg) and can measure over a metre from head to tail. A standard cat tree, designed for a 4 kg cat, wobbles, creaks and tips over. This guide explains how to choose a cat tree that truly suits a large cat, and what to check before buying.
Why an ordinary cat tree doesn't suit a Maine Coon
Entry-level models are designed for average-sized cats. With a large cat, three problems come up almost every time:
- Platforms that are too small: the cat can't stretch out fully, so it doesn't stay.
- A base that is too light: the tree sways with every jump. The cat gets scared and abandons it.
- Scratching posts that are too short: a Maine Coon stretches to its full length to scratch. If the post is too low, it goes back to the sofa.
The 5 criteria to check
1. Height
For a large cat, aim for at least 150 cm, ideally 170 cm or more. Height isn't a luxury: cats look for high points to observe and feel safe. A tree of 170 to 210 cm gives it a real lookout post.
2. Maximum load and weight of the structure
This is the most important criterion, and the one least often stated. Look at the maximum load per platform, but also the total weight of the tree and the size of the base: the wider and heavier the base, the more stable the whole. Allow a margin: a jumping cat exerts a force well above its static weight.
3. Platform and hammock size
A Maine Coon must be able to lie on the platform without its tail or paws hanging over. Prefer wide platforms, raised edges and a reinforced hammock with solid stitching.
4. Hideaways and caves
The opening must be wide enough for it to enter without contorting, and the inside deep enough for it to turn around. Many hideaways on standard models are too narrow for a large cat.
5. Sisal and scratching
Choose thick posts covered in natural sisal over their full height. A good cat tree also protects your furniture: the more attractive the sisal, the less attractive the sofa. Complete it with a scratching mat or post on the floor.

Where to place the cat tree?
Near a window for observation, but not stuck in an isolated corner: cats like to be where the family lives. Place it on a flat floor, preferably against a wall, and secure it with the anti-tipping kit when one is supplied. On a slippery floor (tiles, varnished parquet), add a non-slip mat under the base.
Frequently asked questions
At what age does a Maine Coon reach adult size?
Growth is slow: a Maine Coon often reaches adult size between 3 and 5 years. It is therefore cheaper to buy a tree sized for the adult from the start rather than replace it.
Is an XXL cat tree really more stable?
Not automatically: height increases the risk of tipping if the base is narrow. Look for a wide base and a heavy structure, and anchor the tree to the wall when possible.
My Maine Coon ignores its tree, what can I do?

What is the difference between solid wood and particleboard?
For a large cat, it is a real durability criterion. Read our comparison: solid wood or particleboard cat tree.
